Registrations have now been re-enabled due to the inclusion of different CAPTCHA plugins that have been included in phpBB 3.0.6.

Quote:
Due to a large amount of spambots that are constantly trying to register for accounts here, I have decided to temporarily disable new registrations.

If you wish to create an account here before I enable registrations again (once I've found a way to stop the spambots), please email register@xboxelite.co.uk with a preferred username. Make sure you email from the address you wish to be linked to your profile. A password will be created for you, and you will be able to change this if you wish once your account has been created.

Please note that I will have to process registrations manually, so it may take a couple of days for your account to be created due to personal time constraints.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience caused!

Bot accounts for proper sites are good.. like yahoo and google.. it stops having a billion guests... its the ones that just come to advertise...

Best bet Ross is to turn on the thing to make sure all accounts have to be activated through you.. exactly the same method as above basically except people dont have to message you first...

:)

I've had that on for a couple of days and I was getting sick of the amount of emails I was getting. It was a few every hour, and none of them were proper sign-ups.

And yeah, the bots that phpBB3 recognises are fine - they're just search engine crawlers. Spambots are different.

The bots that show up at the bottom of the index are search engine crawler bots. They go through the forums and index the pages so that they will show up in search engine searches. These are good bots because they help drive traffic to the site. They've always been around, but in phpBB2 they weren't specifically tagged as bots; they were just shown as guests.

The spambots I'm talking about are just computer programs set to run and sign up for forums, post on forums if the account is created successfully, and generally piss everyone off.

There was one and I made it so difficult that even I couldn't read it - but they were still registering.

You should know by now that I don't take decisions lightly. :P

Can't you make up your own one? Like say have a picture of a console and you have to put what console it is.

Registrations have now been enabled again. I'm using the reCAPTCHA plugin for phpBB3 that was released with the newest version of the software (v3.0.6). Hopefully we shouldn't have anymore problems. And if I do, I can just change CAPTCHA plugin. :)
